Reese Witherspoon Swears By This Green Smoothie

  • Reese Witherspoon’s go-to post-vacation meal is a nutrient-packed green smoothie.
  • Key ingredients include apples, bananas, spinach, lettuce, celery, lemon and lime.
  • The smoothie is rich in fiber and antioxidants, supporting gut and overall health.

After getting home from vacation, you may be prioritizing easy meals packed with nutrient-dense foods to help get back on track. Our associate editorial director Carolyn Malcoun loves a three-ingredient mujadara with salad after a long break, whereas our senior nutrition editor Jessica Ball, M.S., RD swears by a hearty yet simple shakshuka.

As for renowned actor Reese Witherspoon, her post-vacation meal is a breakfast staple that she’s sworn by for years. Spoiler: it’s a green smoothie, but The Morning Show star has elevated it since she first posted about it in 2020.

In a recent Instagram video, Witherspoon reveals that this smoothie is her “must-have when I’ve been traveling” after she’s been “eating pizza, pasta and gelato for seven days.” At EatingWell, we believe all foods can be included in a healthy eating pattern, especially when you’re tasting a tour of deliciousness on vacation. As Witherspoon puts it, “it’s all about balance,” so prioritizing the foods that help you feel your best is key. A nutrient-packed smoothie is a great place to start.

Featured ingredients in the video for this smoothie include apples, bananas, spinach, lemon and lime (and we’re assuming she uses the juice of the latter two). She writes in the comments of the video that she also adds in romaine lettuce and celery, crediting those and spinach to giving the smoothie its green color. Simply blend these ingredients together to recreate the bright and healthy drink at home.

What’s not to love about this smoothie? First, antioxidant-rich produce like spinach and apples have cancer-fighting properties thanks to their phytochemicals. The fruits and vegetables in this beverage are also loaded with fiber, which is great for your gut health and can help keep you satiated for longer. Not to mention that this smoothie incorporates hydrating ingredients to help you meet your water goals.

In the past, Witherspoon also has added coconut water to help with consistency as well as pear and almond butter for extra flavor. But what makes smoothies so great is that they can be customized to include whatever you have in your refrigerator and freezer. A combination of frozen fruit, greens, your milk of choice or a scoop or yogurt can go a long way, and catered to your preferences, it’s the perfect morning pick-me-up.
